In a recent Ofcom report, 1.5 million homes in the United Kingdom were identified without internet access.
While it might not immediately strike you as a vital necessity, consider the myriad of tasks reliant on connectivity—managing finances, seeking job opportunities, handling bill payments, and notably, staying in touch with today’s digital age, internet access has become an indispensable modern-day essential.
To further the Prominate commitment to reducing our environmental impact while amplifying our social impact, this holiday season, we’ve teamed up with the award-winning environmental charity Hubbub and their Community Calling campaign. We are donating a quantity of smartphones that will be re-homed. This provides disadvantaged individuals with six months of free data to enable them to have internet access to connect to employment opportunities, education, and health services.
Hubbub works with community groups and local councils to find people who will most benefit and ensure they are given the digital skills to make good use of the device.
To date, 15,000 phones have been re-homed by Hubbub. For some, it’s the first phone they’ve ever had. For others, it’s the first phone that connects to the internet and provides access to much-needed services.
The re-homing and re-use of goods is a strategic goal of Prominate. According to a 2022 study conducted by Material Focus, UK households and businesses collectively generate 1.45 million tonnes of electronic waste (e-waste) annually, with 500,000 tonnes of this waste failing to be recycled. The recycling of e-waste, especially in the tech industry where precious metals like gold, copper, and aluminium, are commonly used, plays an important role in supporting each country’s environmental objectives. A higher rate of e-waste recycling places less reliance on mining and mitigates adverse environmental impacts on biodiversity.
